Just bought a 5 speed radial drill press from Grizzly. Seems to be OK, no complaints, however, they indicated that I should not try to use a radial press for mortising because of the pressure on the horizontal bar. Any ideas, I really would like to use it for mortising at times. Also, besides Grizzly, any idea where I can find a mortising attachment that would fit. Model G 7946. Grizzly techs said they don’t recommend it, but it really is up to the customer whether to use it or not for mortising. All replies appreciated.

Wndncr,
I have not been able to find an attachment for my Craftsman radial drill press. I haven't looked that hard, but Sears doesn't have it.
Remember, you can just move the head forward to cut mortices with a Fostner bit....not bad. Good luck
What's a reason for buying a radial drill press vs. a conventional version?
Mark,
For me, the radial drill press allows me to move the the drill bit to the stock instead of constantly jocking the stock to the drill bit....faster, more accurate, fewer jigs required. Also, because of its reach, I have taken work pieces over to it on the setup bench and drilled there.
Lastly, because hte head swings 90 dergees one way and 45 the other, I can do compound angels quite easily with a simple jig....for flared bench legs or windsor chairs. I'm constantly finding new ways I can abuse mine.
The downside is the center of gravity shifts so it has to be secured well. Also, probably more runout in the lower cost models (like mine)
I've tried cutting mortices with an attachment on a conventional drill press without a lot of success. Compared to a dedicated morticing machine, the attachment is just too light weight. I now either drill out most of the waste with a brad point or forstner bit and then clean up the edges with a chisel or I use a router with a solid carbide spiral bit. A router and spiral bit has to be one of the best methods - the solid carbide bit was expensive but it sure cuts fast and cleanly and a mortice chisel quickly gives square corners.
