The Lie-Nielsen scrub plane came a couple of days ago, and I’ve been trying it out when I get a break from snow shoveling. The iron is ground with a 3″ radius which seems too small to me. Is this what most workers use? Anyone prefer an iron with a larger radius?

I have a Lie-Nielsen scrub plane and have found the radius to be fine just the way that it came out of the box. The plane is designed to remove a lot of wood fast. I find that it works a lot faster than a jack plane to get the big bumps out, but it leaves a more irregular surface that needs to be further refined. I think Rob Cosman has a video that shows how to use it.

I have an old Shelton smoothing plane that I have been converting into a scrub (somehow managed to widen the mouth and ruin it as a smoother - don't ask). As it needs sharpening I increase the curve and the curvier it gets the better it performs as a scrub. Nowhere near a three inch radius yet but will be happy to get there.
As much as you can comfortably plane, depends on the wood/hardness.
Never seen anyone take a full width shaving with a scrub, so you're fine.

That might be an event at the new woodworking Olympics. Expect to see mostly body-builders enter, though. ;-)
