I’m fairly new to wood working, and I told my wife that if I got these expensive noise makers and hand tools that I would build her a armoire-style entertainment center. To make a long story short…HELP!
She decided that the two front doors would look really neat with an oval raise panel. Okay, I said, but now I need help with what the rails and stiles should look like, where they should be joined, and how to make the oval shape. I’m familiar with standard cope and stick raised panel construction for a simple rectangular panel, so I would like suggestions on how to modify to make an oval in the center with the outside still being rectangular. My doors will be approximately 60″H and 25″W each.
Thanks!

Hi Scott..DOUHHH
Well that will teach ya!! Learn the words "Honey don't be silly you cant do that"
Since you screwed up and said ok, I think I would give up on the cope / stick method and build the door with mitered corners your stick bit can still be used to profile the edges and I would use biscuits or a spline on the miter. I think I might use 1"+ stock for strength my sketch looks pretty week for a 25" X 60" door
*Scott, say you made a stile and rail door with really wide stiles and rails. So wide that you could draw your ellipse on them. You could make that, and then cut the ellipse out of the middle, and recut the slot/decorative edge. I talk with my hands, so I hope that makes some sense. There's a great design for marking/cutting ellipses that sometimes goes by the name "BS grinder" (and has nothing to do with bandsaws ;-)). Not a chance on Earth I could describe one, though. If you can't find one on the web somewhere, Bill Hylton's book "Woodworking with the Router" has a good plan.Dave
*Scott,There is an article in FWW vol. 138 on router jigs for rasied panel arched cabinet doors that will help you a great deal, since the principles are the same. FWIW.Dano
