Hi to all, I need help, I have a router bit set to make cope and stick joint. The rails and stiles are 2 3/8 ” wide and 3/4 thick.. and here is the part that my math is not working, I am trying to figure it out..: Let’s say the door is 21 1/2 ” wide. I will substract 2 x 2 3/8 for the stiles and then ?? do I add or substract the lenght of the tongue?? the groove is 3/8″ and tongue is the same of course..?? Maybe I am too tired tonight after planing stock for 15 doors… please help.. in other words, this is where I need help on the ecuation:
Door wide = 21 1/2″
– 2 x 2 3/8″ (4 3/4″)
= 16 3/4″
+ -? = Lenght of the rails??
Thanks a lot
Manny

I don't know which router bit brand you have. I had the same question you are asking. I did the whole kitchen doors two months ago using CTM tools. In that catalog there is a pretty good information that would help you as it did me. Go in http://www.sommerfeldtools.com and find "Arched Raised Panel Doors Made Easy". The whole doors did come out perfit fitting, one door or double doors. Have fun!
Thanks for your reply, what I found is a video.. is that what you are refering? Or is an article? Please let me know
thanks

Step 1. MAKING A SAMPLE DOOR
A) This sample door size is 12" wide by 20" long.
B) The door thickness should be 3/4" - 13/16".
Step 2. DETERMINING THE SIZES OF EACH PART OF THE DOOR
A) Always use a 1/2" overlay on all sides of the door.
B) If door opening is 11" wide by 19" high then the door size is 12" x 20".
IMPORTANT: Use 2-7/16" wide stiles so the templates will work properly.
LEFT STILE3/4" x 2-7/16" X 20"
RIGHT STILE3/4" x 2-7/16" x 20"
TOP ARCHED RAIL3/4" x 4-1/4" x 8"
BOTTOM RAIL3/4" x 2-7/16" x 8"
RAISED PANEL3/4" X 7-3/4" X 16"
1-2.
LEFT AND RIGHT STILES a) Always cut stiles 2-7/16" wide. b) Length of stiles is same as door length.
3.
TOP ARCHED RAIL a) Cut 4-1/4" wide. Templates are 4" wide. b) Length of rail is found by subtracting 4" from the total door width. (Overall door width is 12" minus 4" = 8" length of rail) NOTE: This following procedure can only be used when using 2-7/16" wide stiles. Subtract 4" from the total door width instead of 4-7/8" since 7/16" in each stile will be taken up in the pattern cut.
4.
BOTTOM RAIL a) Always cut 2-7/16" wide. b) Length of rail is again found by subtracting 4" from the total door width. (Overall door width is 12" minus 4" = 8" for bottom rail lengths)
5.
RAISED PANEL a) Width is always 1/4" less than rail length. (1/8" space should be left on each side for expansion of panel) b) Rail length is 8" minus 1/4" = 7-3/4" width of raised panel. c) Length of raised panel is found by taking the overall door length and again subtracting 4". (Overall door length is 20" minus 4" = 16" length of panel)
SUBTRACT 4" FROM THE OVERALL LENGTH OF THE DOOR. SUBTRACT 4" INSTEAD OF 4-7/8" SINCE THE PATTERN CUT TAKES UP 7/16" ON EACH RAIL.
At this time all 5 pieces of the door should be cut to the correct size.
Manny,
Try doing it in Excel.
=sum(21.5-(2*2.375)+(2*.375))
=(Finished Door Width - (2 x Stile width) + (2 x tenon length))
=17.5
= (length of rails before cutting 3/8 tenons)

Thanks a lot, that's what I call math! I did not realize that a couple tenons are created ,therefore adding the lenght of the tenon

That's okay. We don't always see the whole picture.Gary W

Just me so 'try before you buy'
I have three sets.. One Whiteside and the others L-Cheapos... (Well, not THAT cheap!)
ALL are slightly different sizes.
I for one would take some scrap and make a test set and measure your results.
Unless you already have a set-up block set made for your set you will need to cut some scrap anyway to set your bit heights correctly..
Note: You may find small differences depending on the sticks you are using.. Some woods just cut differently. At least I have found that...
Thanks a lot!
I just run a sample test piece through my sticker setup. I then measure the tenon end (whether or not I cut the tenon) The distance from the outside of the stock to the bottom of the groove is the "remainder" Finished door width- 2x remainder=rail length and panel width before allowance for expansion. also finished door height-2x remainder=panel height before allowances.Happy woodworking Bob
Door opening width less 2 reveals less 2 styles plus 2 tongues. You add the 3/4" back in to both the rails and door panels.
