I’m building a medicine cabinet out of red oak for the bathroom. Unfortunately, I lack the artistic ability to design from scratch. The wife found a picture of one she liked at target.com and I am replicating with some modifications. Fortunately the description provided some information i.e. overall dimensions and such. The glass windows will be stained glass. They are trimmed in aluminum framing and will be wrapped with oak. I used E-cabinets to lay it out. The questions is width of the rail & stiles. Design wise, is there a general rule for how wide to make them. Structurally, the frame of the window will prevent sagging, so I’m not worried about that. E-cabinets did not have a way to adjust the rail & stile thickness with the glass door. The doors are 13″ wide, and 13.5″ high. Another question would be the size of the crown molding. If the cabinet is 26″ high what would be a proportionate size for crown. Once again, I just picked one from ecabinets to see how it looked. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

What type of hinges are you going to use? for the euro type 2" at least wide is needed. if using a barrel hinge the you can go thinner. (these are what I would use). Frame the mirrors with 1 1/2 wide rail and stile. The glass will give lots of support if fixed in with some clauk. Crown size 1x4 should look right.
2 1/2" is the standard. beyond that it is what ever you think looks good.
Mike.
