Caught the last ten minutes of the New Yankee Workshop and saw Norm building what he calls a “workshop hutch” for storing tools including a small worktop. Very nice design, but it left me with a few questions.
- Why did Norm bother to dovetail the backs of the drawers when the fronts were just staples in a dado joint?
- Why dovetail plywood drawers anyway?
- Why was he using a Leigh jig, and not a Porter Cable????
- Was I right? Did I actually count SEVEN routers in the drawer that he opened? (I only have one and hardly ever use that.)
Guess although I don’t always understand why he does things the way he does them, I still like the show. Just wish my PBS affiliate didn’t show it on Saturday.

I believe I read something from Norm that he actually owns 32 routers. I thought I was over the top with 4.
Dovetails in plywood drawers would be for strength although I can't imagine why he'd tack the fronts. I haven't seen that episode in a while but I believe he dovetailed the fronts of the drawers so that they wouldn't get yanked off when he opened them with all that weight in there and tacked the backs.
I think it was a Leigh jig and not a PC. I've seen him use 4 different jigs over the years.
I sometimes question the way Norm performs certain steps but I've come to realize that there are no right and wrong answers when it comes to woodworking and he would probably question the way I perform steps, too.

Yikes! Don't think I have enough space to store 32 routers. Perhaps I could hang them on hooks set into the rafters, then walk around the shop with a pronounced slump. Honestly though, I think I'd sell them all, and buy a nice set of hollows and rounds.

Jeff, Is that the hutch that is located on the west wall of his workshop? (See NYW Website). If so, I am interested in building one of those for my shop. Looks like it would be handy to store tools, gadgets and small items in all those little compartments, plus nice size drawers on the lower level. Thanks
Looks the same to me. Here's the link to the plans.
