I just got back from Maryland with about 225bf of Amer. Holly. I understand that drying it is a crapshoot, that it twists and checks
badly. Any predictions on blue stain, degradation, etc if I sticker and weight it down it and keep it inside?
Advice on 12/4 slabs? The rest is 4/4 and 8/4?
Turn green and then lete it rest before going on?

Dave,
from what I have read on the subject Holly is best dried using a vacuum kiln. If the wood was cut in the winter while the sap is down, then there will be less chance for the blue stain. I believe the thicker the slabs the harder it will be to dry sucessfully without degradation. Sorry I can't offer more advice - any holly I ever tried to dry turned into firewood.
Good luck,
Lee
Well, I went to all this trouble. I'll see just how much really troublesome wood I can make into firewood. I'll let you know in a year!Sigh
Bob Smalser probably can help. If he doesn't answer here soon, you can find him at WWA. Here's one of his posts over there:
