I have used the Behlen Por-O-Pac oil based filler. It comes very thick--almost like putty on my last can, and should be thinned with mineral spirits or naptha until almost like heavy cream. I generally tint it with artists oil paint. Most advise suggests applying it over a wash coat of dewaxed shellac. It should also be applied after any dye coloring.
You didn't mention what wood you were using. I like the pore filler for formal finishes on walnut or mahogany. Oak pores are so large that it is hard to fill them--two coats, and frankly I don't much like the look of a full finish on oak.
I've used BLO and 4F pumice to fill the pores on red oak (It was top coated with several coats of tung oil.). It gives a semi-antique patina kind of color to the wood.
Just me so.. I bee rong before...
Not sure how large of a surface you want to do.. I have used shellac and the sawdust from the wood.. Blender makes it really fine dust.. Mix in the shellac and wipe away!

The Enduro brand pore filler available through http://www.compliantspraysystems.com is a dream to use.
I've also successfully used Rockler's Wonderfil water-based putty as pore filler after watering it down a tad.
Among the oil-based, I've had good luck with Star brand.
Good luck,

Thank you- These products are applied before staining?
"These products are applied before staining?"
Hi Yogi,
The application sequence depends on the results you're trying to acheive, e.g., when I tint the pore filler, I may want the coloration to be limited to the pores, so I'll seal the wood before filling the pores; on the other hand, if I want a uniform look, I may stain after filling the pores.
I've attached a snapshot of a finishing test piece in which one quadrant of a piece of oak ply has the pores filled with red-tinted pore filler. In this case, I didn't want the red anywhere but in the pores, so I sealed before filling.
Good luck,-Jazzdogg-

Need the filler be tinted, or can I go over it with a pigment stain? Thanks again-
Either way works. Just pay attention to the ingredients of the pore filler, stain, and top coat to ensure compatibility as you normally would.-Jazzdogg-

I know I'm kinda working you over here, and I appreciate your help- My buddy says I can use the filler over stain, so long as it's oil over oil- Yes no? Much obliged-
I'm glad to help. Your friend is correct.
We are lucky to have a bona-fide finishing expert among us by the name of Paul Snyder; he's provided lots of valuable finishing information here on Knots, in the pages of Fine Woodworking magazine, and at his website. I think it's: http://www.furniturefinishwizard.com
You can find his previous posts using the search function.
Additionally, there's lots of useful finishing information available at Jeff Jewitt's website http://www.homesteadfinishing.com
Good luck,-Jazzdogg-
