I am going to build new kitchen cabinets out of Hickory and would like to use a waterbased clear coat. I will probably sand to 220 grit and then apply an oil-based wipe on/wipe off stain followed by the clear top coats. What brands, type, etc. of water-based product is acceptable for use on kitchen cabs? What type of finishing schedule would you recommend? I will be spraying the clear coats with an HVLP conversion gun. Thanks for you input.

Duane...I built my kitchen and other cabinets out of oak and used Varathane Crystal Clear Waterborne Diamond wood finish(satin) and to me it worked out very nice. I put on three coats(recommended by Varathane). I also used the same on my wood tongue and groove ceilings. I heard recently in a discussion that if you put this over oil base, that the oil base should be completely dry before the water based application. Hope this helps. Rod in Appleton, WA
