I am in the process of refinishing a piano. I am just about finished stripping off 100 years of grime, crud, varnish and whatever else was on it. The bare wood with some trace of the old stain is now ready for my new coat of a dark stain. I plan to use a good brand oil based stain. My question is what should I do after I get the stain on. Should I put a few coats of polyurethane or what? Piano will only receive gentle use once the refinish job is done.
So what do you recommend putting over the stain???
Thanks,
Robert

You can use whatever you want to for the cabinet. The sound will not be affected. Traditional finishes are shellac and lacquer but varnish will more durable.
