I’ve been inspired by David Fisher’s articles and videos about carving bowls. I think my next tool purchase is an adze. I’ve seen the Pfeil’s on the Woodcraft site and a Garrett Wade hand adze, and a Czech adze from a company called Narex on Amazon. Also seen a number of small producers online..
This is not a small investment, so I was looking to try to benefit from others experience before deciding. Just looking for something comfortable to use, holds an edge well, and small enough for bowls.
Thanks,
John

Jason Lonon. He's a blacksmith who makes fantastic tools. I love his bowl adze. I have a couple of his axes and a sloyd knife too. I can't say enough good things.
The Pfeil has all the wrong geometry for bowl carving. It would require a lot of work to fix it, and it still wouldn't be great. I have the Narex, and it is extremely mediocre. The difference between it and the Jason Lonon is night and day.

GRÄNSFORS are very good - I used one of their gutter adze to make bowls in my green woodworking phase. As JC2 says, the angle of the dangle is critical but the GF adze worked well for me and took a wicked-sharp edge of good resilience. I've not used a gutter adze from other manufacturers, though, to compare them.
You can use a bent gouge too. In fact, both are useful for different stages of hollowing out a bit of half-log: the adze for the major chopping at the start and the gouge for refining the inside curve as it approaches "finished".
Some just use the bent gouge, which is slower but you save the price of a good adze. If you want to make loadsa bowls, the adze is worth getting.
I sold all my green woodworking tools some years ago, returning to cabinetmaking from making the stuff more typical in green woodworking. One advantage of getting a high quality tool is that it will sell second-hand for at least what you paid for it and maybe more, depending on how long you've had it and assuming it's in very good condition. That was the case with my 5 year-old GF stuff, sold on e-bay.

Does anyone have experience with Svante Djarv or Seven Pines Forge (Ted Ferringer) adze?
I haven't used either one. But if a Svante Djarv was available, buy it.
