Just wondering if someone out there could recommend a good book on built-ins. I am looking for best practices, etc when it pertains to building a built-in. I am gong to purchase an HDTV in the near future and was looking to build a unit to house this and paraphernalia, etc.

Check the latest (April, 2006) issue of FWW, p. 74, "Furniture for Your Next TV."
I have it. It isn't too comprehensive. Actually this article is what led to my posted question. I would like a more definitive text on building built-ins, including best practices, etc. I am currently building a shelving unit and really enjoy the process but was wondering if there were better methods, etc.Regards,

Don't know about a book, but talk with home theater and stereo installers. They can tell you what not to do, like making the cabinet big enough for the components but with no allowance for the wiring that needed to run everywhere behind them.
Full extension pullouts are good for the major components such as receivers and amps. Also heat is an issue that needs a way to escape the convines of the cabinet. Other than that it's a matter of taste in design and physically allowing room for all current and future equipment.
Check out avsforum.com . They have a number of forums devoted to home theather room construction, I bet someone there can help you out.
Taunton sells books on builtins. Try this. If the link doesn't work go to their website and books on Home Design.

There is an issue of FW 3 - 4 years back that has a TV cabinet on the cover. As I remember, there is some good information about ventilation, wiring concealment, etc.

Does anyone know which issue this is? Ventilation and wiring concealment are two issues I am currently dealing with. Thanks for your post...Regards,

Check out FWW issue 166, Dec 2003. It contains an article titled Basics of built-in furniture. I'm about to use it to build a built in bookcase/cabinet for my office.

Thanks. I have this as I can get it on-line with the FineWoodworkingNetwork.com. This is a great article. I am using this as the foundation of what I am currently building. Still there are a lot of details left out that I would like answers to. I'll research what the others have suggested and thanks for your post.Regards,

Buzz,
For a good book with great photos and quite a few installation tips on residentail built ins for all rooms of the house I recommend Built In Furniture by Jim Tolpin. It's published by Taunton. It came out a few years ago so may not any info on the newer TV s. Gary
