What is the collective wisdom here on the best finish to enhance the flame or curly feature of cherry? This would be on a kitchen table top, so ultimately it is going to get coated with a durable top coat. I would like to get something on first which maximizes the figuring. –Ken

Ken,
I don't know what the "collective" consensus would be but, using boiled linseed oil will really "pop" the grain. Just make sure you apply a thin coat, rag off the excess and let it fully dry before applying your finish. FWIW.

*My one and only time to finish curly/burly cherryI used Tung oil(I can't tell the difference in it andlinseed oil) I like to suntan cherry some at this point, then applied shellac. Not really durable but looks great.JR
*Either boiled linseed oil or pure tung oil will work great. Just put on enough to wet the wood anget the color you want. Do not flood it on. Wipe it as dry as you can and let it set overnight. Now you can put on your final finish. BLO makes an excellent colorant for figured woods.
*Ken,I asked the Tried & True company a similar question and their response was to apply one coat of their Danish Oil, which is a moderately polymerized linseed oil. Followed by 2 coats of their Original Wood finish which is highly polymerized linseed oil combined with beeswax. I asked them why the first coat of Danish & they said to pop the grain. I haven't tried it yet. I would think the highly polymerized oil would pop it.Lar
*Follow-up to my method. I use a diluted oil, aprox. 5-1 with naptha. It seems to dry faster than just pure oil. JR
*Thanks for all the suggestions. Looks like I'm off to make sure my boiled linseed oil supply is relatively fresh.....
