Record 073 shoulder Plane – Retrofit with L-N Lg. 73 Blade?
I have a basically unused Record 073 with a bad blade. I am considering trying the L-N 73 blade – L-N said it could be returned if it doesn’t work well. Has anyone tried this retrofit? I really like the quality of the A2 along with the thickness of L-N blades generally (along with Hock too). Let me know if you have pertinent comments on this. Thanks in advance.

LN makes refined versions of classic designs, and then makes their blades to work with them. Hock makes replacement blades for classic tools. I'd just go with the Hock. Replacement NOS irons for your plane are on ebay right now.
Can I ask, if the plane is unused, how is the blade bad?
It is basically a NOS body/bolts/cap iron. I don't know any of the history but blade that came with it had one side of the head portion ground out of parallel with other- not worth my time to fix it. 2 corners of blade head were really ground away too. It could have come from another plane? Just restored 2 Stanley's can't spend anymore time on plane restore biz.. I have a number of Hock blades and love them. That said I spoke to Ron Hock today and he is not going to be making any more custom blades i.e. for shouder planes. He's in the middle of transferring that business to Raney Nelson/Daed Toolworks. He doesn't stock shoulder plane blades like he does reg irons for Stanley 4 e.g.
I did see some of the NOS blades for it along with some Iles which I've never used. At this stage I just prefer the A2 in the thickness offered by L-N or Hock. I've gotten used to how that they perform and how they hold an edge...bit of a personal thing there
I did this. The Lie Nielsen blade fits the body perfectly. But the Record adjusting nut and screw did not fit the slot. I replaced them with new ones from Lie Nielsen. I can not remember for sure but I might have had to retap something as well. Overall it worked well with out undue effort. I have been using it for years now. I hope this helps.
Thanks very much for info-thought the blade would fit. We'll have to see about the adjuster nut. Sounds like L-N was pretty accommodating and sold you the parts...we'll see how it goes
Yes they were very helpful, as they always are.
This plane is based on the Record 073, which was itself a copy of a Preston shoulder plane. A very heavy plane measuring 1¼" by 8" with an adjustable mouth.
