I’m mildly surprised that no one has written this up.
I’m installing two 52-1/2 Ds on a new workbench.
One is an original Record, the other is a brand new Anant.
I can probably figure it out, but it would be interesting to see if there was a “correct” way to disassemble a Record vise, so one can install the rear jaw, finish glue up, then install the front jaw.

I have both a Record 52 1/2 and an Annant version (one on each of two benches). I must have done it wrong because I never had to disassemble anything. And yes, the rear jaw is buried on both.
There is no need to take it apart. I installed one with the rear jaw behind the apron and left it assembled.
Yup, that's the way I did it last time. However, several sources mention installing the rear jaw, and I can see how that would be a lot easier. So I'm interested in seeing if there's a "right" way to do it.Besides, that was ten years ago. Records were lighter ten years ago.
If you want to dismantle the vise this may help:

However assembling it in place may be difficult unless you turn the bench upside down.
That's looking like the deciding factor.I took my old one apart, and cleaned it up.While the rear jaw would be a LOT easier to install by itself, (I still may do that, at least on the one that I'm going to use as a tail vise) re-assembling the thing with the top in place would involve holding the front jaw and the whole screw/guide bar mechanism up with one hand while I bolt the half nut home with the other.THAT would be hard-- So if the top has to be flipped, the vises installed, and then the top flipped back again, there isn't much profit in tearing the vises apart. The only place it makes sense is if you have to install the rear jaw, then do a bunch of other work to the top before you put the top together.Or if you have someone to help you install the vises, so you can install the rear jaw, build the bench, then install the front jaws without flipping the top. It's that final flip, the completed top, with two Record 52s installed on it that I'm dreading...
I used an adjustable stand to hold up the vice close to the underside of the bench. Once I had started the nuts on the (overlength) bolts I was able to remove the stand and carry on tightening.Mnay people seem to use screws to attach their vices. I prefer to use bolts. If you use screws the above may not work.
I have several old 52 1/2s I just clamp them to the bench top and bolt them on. If the bench has an apron, just cut it such that the vise sits flush with the top, glue a stiffener on the underside flush with the cutout, clamp and bolt.
