I’m just here to spread the love. Now that Record Plane Co went out of business, a brand new No 05 in the box went for $102.00 on eBay Item number: 300066048629. If you have a Record tool you may want to keep it in good shape or replace it with an old Stanley or Lie-Nielsen.

I've got 2 Record spokeshaves, flat and round bottom, that I've had for quite a while. I replaced them both with Boggs' LN spoke shaves about 6 years ago, and haven't used them since. Maybe now's the time to make them available to another woodworker.
I saw another Record plane about a month or so ago sell for silly money on ebay, as well.

I sold by 10 year old Record #5 on ebay for about 75.00 and replaced it with a very old Keenkutter bedrock style #5 and it is a much nicer tool. Anyway thanks for the update.

I always thought Record planes were "decent" middle of the road, tools. Now that they're gone, I wonder if prices will go up and up, or decline...?
Expert since 10 am.
I agree with you on middle of the road quality. They were a good plane but certainly no LN or Veritas. I suspect they'll go up simply because of their rarity in the marketplace considering all the Stanleys out there. That and the fact they were made in England so not too many crossed the pond. It'll take 5-10 years to know for sure but if they're collectible they may be the next Keen Kutter; if not, the next Fulton.
Agree with you and Jackplane on that one. They were definately less work out of the box than a Stanley to get operating correctly. However, no where near as ready as a new LN.

Blue spokeshaves, get your blue spokeshaves here!
aaaahhhh is there anything better than a well tuned Lie-Nielsen? Highly doubtful. I wonder why LN hasn't come out with a circular plane like a Stanley 113 yet? Inquiring minds want to know!
Actually, I've got a list of planes that I'm waiting for LN to work their magic on. Compared to a custom infill maker, they're still quite reasonable, and my guess is, our woodworking great great grandchildren will probably be drueling over them.
I got tired of waiting for them to come out with a router plane, and just ordered one from LV. It's my first veritas, as I've always purchased LN in the past.
Jeff
I'm surprised LN has never come out with "Collector's Club" tools the way Bridge City Tool Works does. He occasionally comes out with an anniversary tool for Woodcraft or Stanley but nothing on an annual basis. Maybe he's missing the boat???
I think LN is so busy trying to keep up with the demand for their existing stuff that they don't have the man hours available to create something like that. I just hope that they keep introducing new (to them) tools to their already awesome line. There aren't too many manufacturer's in any business where I feel I can go to purchase something, and get awesome quality every time.

The LV is a very good router plane. Well made beastie.
LN did just introduce the little router plane and the large one isn't too far behind. My understanding is they had one at the show in Boston in early December.
Take care, Mike
Thanks for the info, Mike. I didn't know LN was coming out with one so soon. Rob Lee brought Veritas' version to Montanafest 2 summer's ago, and we all had a chance to check it out. I was quite impressed, especially with it's adjuster.

Jeff, I have the usual flock of bench planes and yes the Bailey style Stanley's and paticularly the Record's were quite useable, To the point, about 20 or 25 years ago a local hardware guy and a good friend was to retire. Now I always bought all the small and one off things from him like a box of #4, 3/4" brass flat head screws not 6 like the the rest of the locals. I had his respect as I would come in and rattle off ips pipe fitting parts by size and type -bang bang and I am out the door.
One day totally by chance as we were wont to chat I asked I he had any planes and he lights up as he goes in the back and brings out a Stanley #5, a Record #5c and a Record #020c compass plane. He knew that he had absolutely no chance to sell that stock before he closed up the shop. He told me $25 each and in one or two nanoseconds I said ok. They are still in their boxes after being tuned up, done with T-9 and put in socks. the 5c runs better than the Stanley but not better than my Clifton or my 605. I will probably sell the 5;s in a few years. All the best, Paddy
