Hello: Anyone out there have seen/used these? Is this the old ”Record” company that made planes and chisels? I am starting to consider a benchtop morticer (where the heck will I put it?) and want to check into all the available ones. Duke

Hi,
Record was bought out by some other company. I read this recently somewhere but I cant remember where or who the company is. It might be Dewalt or something like that but I'm not sure.
Dimitri
Irwin tools bought Record. Or at least part of the woodworking tools division. The older I get, the better I was....
Duke, I own a Record lathe, made by Record of Sheffield. I know this is not apples and apples as manufacturers change. But back when I bought it, they had a reputation of making reasonably priced, but well made and innovative products. Based on that experience, if it were me, I would at least take the time to look at this product first hand.
Record was bought by Irwin and the Sheffield factory was sold off on a piecemeal basis.
Vintage Record is fine. Stay away from the new stuff.

How sad. 'really makes me appreciate my 52 1/2 bench vise.
Ken,
Look at the end of the table casting in picture 27 of your link. Current castings are pretty shoddy.
I have a record lathe purchased about 6 years ago, partly on the basis that the company produced very good castings and had been selling in Australia for the better part of 100 years. Since purchase by the US there are no local suppliers of parts in Australia.
Ken, that bench h/s morticer looks similar to the lighter of the Multico range-originally British. I would not be too impressed with it because it has a drill chuck system to hold the auger. It is better to have a positve stop and allen screw system to hold the auger.
The best T section sash clamps are still made by Record (Irwin)-in fact they seem to have improved them by some sort of anti-rust coating to the blade.
Here's the UK web site for Record Power tools - http://www.recordpower.co.uk/index.pl, which will provide you with more info about the company and its products.
It appears now that Record Power tools is a separate company from the Record Hand Tools company that produced vises, planes, chisels, etc. and which was purchased by Newell Rubbermaid and then dismantled, although both companies may have once been part of the same company.
Correct and then Rubbermaid tried to transfer the hand tool and vise production to China. the first prototypes came out so bad that they were un-marketable. this was about a year or two ago. after this I heard no more news .Rob Lee probably can give more accurate recent news on Record.
