Having a problem with brushing poly over a refinished dresser that was
stained with Minwax Red Mahogany stain. Seems the brushing action lifts the
stain off, leaving a muddy/mottled/streaky/crappy appearance. Short of
spraying the poly(no spray room-in my next dream shop), is there a way to
apply the top coats of poly to avoid this problem? And everytime you return
to the container of poly, you bring a little of stain back which spoils
the can of poly. Any advice would be appreciated.

Michael,
Sounds like the excess stain was not ragged off and/or the stain was not fully dried. What kind of wood is this and did you use the Min Wax Wood Finish, oil base stain, or one of their other types?

*Mike, What if you sprayed a light coat of poly with a spray can to seal the stain and then brushed the subsequent coats. Use the same brand of poly just to be safe. I've read that Red Mahogany is bad about lifting even after thorough drying.
*Michael here. Solved the problem with a spray application of poly. Initially planned to use spray cans of poly to seal then brush on asusual. Cost of spray poly turned me off($5.00 or more per can). My 1 1/2 HP Emglo is barely able to keep up with a normal spray gunwith a 1 quart gun, but works OK with a small touch-up sprayer usingthinned Deft Gloss. Can spray 3 times in one day. Now it looks decentand not something an ape would have applied.
*I've just finished a piece of furniture. It's made of pine, and finished in Minwax red mahogany stain. I was just ready to apply my first coat of finish, Minwax polyacrylic (water based), and happened to read the fine print on the can. It stated NOT to use the product with red mahogany stain. I used minwax oil based polyurethane instead, and had no problems. I've always called the water based acrylic "Polyurethane", although I don't think it is. Could it be that you used this stuff on your piece? I did notice that the red mahogany took forever to dry adequately as well.
