How can I remove black rust/oxidation stains from old red oak to create a uniform finish? I’ve tried household bleach but the black stains show up when the wood is moistened. Would oxalic (sp?) acid work? Is this the same as “deck cleaner”?

The answer to both of your questions is yes.
*I have the same black rust problem on my new unfinished red oak timber frame. I'm going to "stain" the wood with potassium dichromate before oiling, will the oxalic acid harm the wood or prevent the potassium dichromate from staining properly? Does it need to be rinsed off the surface or will cloth drying suffice? Would appreciate any advice, these mothers are heavy!
