Will 2 cured varnish wood surfaces in contact with each other adhere to one another? The Bench has two stumps for support at each end. I have varnished (3 coats) on the surface of each top surface of the two stumps. The bench is notched at each end to provide a flat surface for the bench to rest on the stumps. If I varnish the underside notched area of the bench, will the two surfaces in contact with each other adhere to one another? Suggestions?
Thanks,

They may stick together a bit, but not enough to be trusted to hold the bench together. You'll always be able to lift off the seat. What's your goal?
Actually I was hoping they would not stick together at all. I just wanted to seal the exposed wood to prevent insect infestation and make a plesant visual appearsence for visable parts.
Bugs will arrive eventually, keeping it up from direct ground contact will make it last longest. Go with a penetrating product instead of a film finish so you can reapply without having to strip off the old coats.
If they stick a little, a bit of a kick will separate them. Those surfaces are rough enough they wouldn't be "glued" together.
I'd finish all sides of everything, with extra coats on end grain.
Super, Thanks All, I had already planned to have the the two end stumps on round concrete stepping stones instead of directly on the ground. I did try a "waterproofing" penetrating coating but did not like what it did to the color of the natural wood. So, I sanded it all down again and went with the Varnish. Much nicer enhancement color wise of the natural wood. The wood stumps were beginning to split while drying and after almost a year, I at first tried to use a wood filler, but could not find a good color match (visible in second pic) and decided to just leave them (rustic bench anyway), so I am going to put my experimental patch on the down side. I have been allowing a lot of extra varnish to run down into cracks to provide as much insect protection as possible. Not sure what to do on the top Bench cracks? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
