Hi, I migrated over here from the dark side(breaktime) and need to put a finish on a sanded redwood ceiling and need some advice,
a low lustre that shows the wood well. I am concerned about the waviness since it was sanded all in place so I think a duller finish will hide it better???
Steer me in the right direction, I’ve looked through every book/mag/article I’ve got and the only redwood mentioned is on deck with thompsons or similar deck sealers. Will ths work???
Thanks for the help

Well it would be easier if you could put the ceiling on the ground so it would be easier to work on (just kidding). If you have any scraps try some wipe on poly or maybe even paste wax. I am sure you could spray it with a laquer but that might be over kill since it should not get a lot of foot trafic(please stop me before I hurt my self) The poly will darken it some but it should look good anyway. I would not use a water base product because the grain might raise a lot. Anyway it's always a good idea to try what ever finish you use on some scraps.
Good luck and send us some photos when done it looks really nice.

Yeah I was thinking anti gravity shoes or something also!!!
I have a bunch of shelves of the same redwood out of a wall length built in that I am using for test pieces ( Ran em all through the planer for good sample pcs.)not sold yet on the poly though, the upside down workability issue....But the Boiled Linseed Oil seems slightly easier I was hoping the may be another finish out there that I am missing that will work and won't darken the wood too much. It's24x20 so its a big area.Thank though, for the laugh!

3 or 4 coats of Waterlox original (Redwood will do a good job of soaking up any finish) would be a good product to consider. You can spray it, roll it, brush it or wipe it on and it's impossible to do a bad application job of it.
If that finish is too glossy for you, put a final coat of Waterlox Satin on your ceiling. More than one coat of the satin will cause it to look cloudy and that may not be a good thing.

I have 4 coats of Waterlox on my Redwood deck and it looks great after a year of being outdoors.

On the lighter side of things....
If you decide to use the Waterlox (I'm sorry I didn't understand you already have used it in the past) and you can also make a bee hive and have about a million honey Bee's in your living room when you are done!
I have an Avocado ranch and that stuff attracts bee's like ....well, you fill in the blank.
Enjoy and have fun,Terry

WHY? Wood is Wood! Why hide it's wonderful look AS IS!
To a point, I agree, but I with light on it. I am affraid of it looking too wavy! I appreciate natural but in this case i think a nice satin finsh will keep the look at the same time as show off the wood. I just spent 3 1/2 days sanding/ filing/ detailing it.
So I dont want to hide it. I could've painted it to hide it.My phraseology needs a little work.
