My Mom wants to redo the kitchen and I am leaning towards refacing vs. all new builds. Her current cabinets are very sturdy – built approx 15 years ago and with new doors and drawer fronts would prepsent a whole new look. I have never done refacing of the boxes (face frame cabinets) and am looking for advise on techniques and materials.
Thanks

cispook,
I would suggest the very thorough book, "Refacing Cabinets," by Herrick Kimball. Gary
Second the Kimball book. It's great. Rocker carries the production version of his "MUT" if you don't want to make your own.
I'm doing the same thing right now, but I decided to replace the whole face frame instead. I don't know how this would work on most cabinets, but I've had very good luck so far. One bank of wall cabinets ~3 feet high ~ 5 feet wide with 3 doors done.
I used to work for a company called Kitchen Tune-Up and this is all we did. It is really pretty simply. If you understand how to build a face frame and know how to veneer you can do it. The main thing that I would say it's all in the lay out of the veneer. Rails first styles second. Always overlap your veneers abnd make a nice straight cut through both veneers thus giving you a prefect seam. Good luck.
