Can anyone recommend to me a good “basic primer” on finishing techniques? What I need is on of the “Dummy” series books on finishing. I would like to learn more aboiut the different types of finishes and methods of application. Something more involved than openIng a can off the shelf and slapping the contents on with a brush. HVLP sounds very interesting. Thanks for any names or titles etc.

Bob Flexner's "Understanding Wood Finishing" is an excellent introduction. Jeff Jewitt's books are uniformly excellent. There's lots of free information on his site nad you can order his books there:

It's easy to waste money on finishing books that are "basic" and seem like "a good place to start" but which oversimply the process and lead you only into trouble. Flexner's book mentioned above is a must-have. Another book I find very useful is Jeff Jewitt's Great Wood Finishes.
Both the Flexner and Jewitt suggestions are excellent. Another great book that focuses a bit more on using commercial finishes and equipment is Ron Bryze's book "The College of Wood Finishing Knowledge" which appears to be largely available online here: http://www.ronbryze.com/MainPages/Finish/FinishMenu/FinishMenu_page_2.htm
Or you can purchase a copy of his book directly from him here: http://www.ronbryze.com/
