I have been asked to refinish a 20 year old door with carved panels in it. I don’t want to deface the carving detail and since it is a door in use I’m somewhat at a loss on how to get the old finish off.
I could sand each detail if I wanted to take the next several years. Or, I could take the door off and use stripper but I’m not sure how that would treat the carving.
How do I do this without manualy sanding each detail?

mechanical stripping will not work for carved details. I dont know what your aversion to using a stripper is -- but they are completely safe for wooden doors. Use a methylene chloride based paste stripper applied to the door (take it off and lay it flat) or an NMP based stripper like Peel-away or Citrustrip. They will remove the finish without harming the wood or destroying detail. Use planer chips rubbed into the carved areas to remove the finish/stripper sludge and then neutralize with alcohol or mineral spirits

*Jeff: Thanks for the info. I don't use strippers very much and when I have I have found them to be messy and still requiring a bit of scraping, like when taking old paint off furniture or siding. But I don't think I've used the type you mention. This is a one-of-a-kind door and I am being super cautious.I will give your strippers a try on a test piece and press onward.Thanks.
