Good friends recently purchased a custom ordered dinning room set for their new home. It was delivered with a high gloss finish on the table top (the chairs and pedistal stand are kind of satin or semi-gloss). They don’t like the high gloss finish – and both the retail store where they ordered it and the manufacturer (Stanley) refuse to do anything about it. They asked me to see if there is something I could do to (DULL) the finish. I tried 4/0 steel wool (in an inconspicuous spot), and past wax. the sheen is OK but the finish looks scratched. The table sits in an alcove with windows on three sides (really shows up the surface).
Any suggestions on treatment to the existing finish (I’m guessing maybe catalized lacquer) or re-finishing would be VERY much appreciated. They want a DURABLE semi-gloss finish.
Thanks
Ed

Hmmm...you might not want to get involved.
It is probably a lacquer finish, and it may be possible for you to spray a satin lacquer over it all to get the finish they want. You can find out by seeing if lacquer thinner dissolves the finish. If so, a light sanding and a good coat of satin is all it needs.
You need to be careful though. Most production shops use high tech lacquers now, not plain old nitrocellulose lacquer, and you could end up with a big mess. If their table is coated with conversion varnish, you will ruin it with conventional lacquer.
Or you could simply admonish them for not having you build the table in the first place, and tell them they got what they paid for.
