am repairing and refinishing an old oak rocker. i think the old finish in shellac over stain, which is now heavly alligatored. the bumps are very coarse. maybe even measurable. can i do anything beside strip the entire piece? thanks in advance for any advice.

You can also use a finish amalagmator.
Stripping shellac is a pretty easy job, using denatured alcohol. I think you'll need to do if it is alligatored.
I agree with Gretchen----------I have used denatured alcohol numerous times on old pieces with success. I put it in a spray bottle (such as window cleaner comes in) , spray liberaly and give it a little time to work and rub with 0000 steel wool.
