I am in the process of refinishing a marble topped dresser that my wife has been asking me to do for years. The dresser is walnut and the wood part is not my problem. I am looking for some suggestions on cleaning up the marble tops. They are white with some grey marbling. They have some stains, and few if any scratches or other imperfections. So i need to clean them up and polish them. I would like to be able to get the stains out as well, though have no idea what caused them or how deep they go. Any pointers on working with marble would be appreciated.
Thanks, Marc

My experiences with marble have been frustrating when it comes to removing a stain. I spent a bundle of dough on marble floors in my last home, and regretted it immensely. Marble is very porous, and even when properly sealed, will act as a sponge when it comes to staining. My neighbor is a manufacturer's rep for a stone and marble cleaning and polishing equipment, and he was unable to completely remove a wine stain in the marble floor using his best machine. I remember him mentioning a chemical, but that it was very toxic and would require us to leave the house for a few days. I passed on the opportunity to use it. I'll see him this weekend, and I'll ask him for you. If I find any good news out, I'll post it.

thanks jeff. marc
Marble is sensitive to both acid and alkaline substances. Ammonia, fruit juices or extracts as well as many household cleaners can damage marble. Some of the home remedies may actually degrade the mineral composition. There are specialized cleaners made specifically for marble as well as polishes. One chemical that is often used on stains is acetone. You should do some research and not take inexperienced advice from a forum. There are a number of companies that carry the products and info you want.http://www.marblelife.com/products.htm?gclid=COXcudSpu4wCFQmYQAodvyehVwBeat it to fit / Paint it to match
Maybe you should pass this advice along to the guy who started the thread.

Wrong dang reply button and I didn't even see your post?Beat it to fit / Paint it to match
LOL! I do it all the time, too, my friend. It's one thing that I think the fine folks at FWW should change. It should prompt who you wish to reply to, instead of requiring the drop down button to be clicked on. Oh, well, we'll all live!

Take a look here for some help. Marble needs to be treated "right".
