Hi,
I have several marquetry pictures that were made in the the early 1990’s elderly craftsman that have some mold on them. I have read a number of posts about removing mold from furniture so I think I have a plan for cleaning them up. I know that they may have some stains in the veneers that i will not be able to remove and that will probably be OK.
The finish is not in great shape and I am sure that it is damaged below the mold. I am thinking about sanding them lightly to remove the old finish and then refinishing them with Sherwin Williams polyurethane or varnish. I have used both their solvent based and water based for a number of furniture projects. I like the water based but I have questions about using it on marquetry.
If anyone has any experience with a project like this I would love some advice. I know that the veneer will be thin so I can’t sand much but I am afraid to use any kind of finish remover because I don’t know what glue was used for the veneer.
Thanks for your thoughts
BTW anyone know how to change my name from the system generated id?

I can't think of a glue that would be adversely impacted by use of a methylene chloride based stripper--hide glue would be OK as would the PVA glues. You would want to seek a stripper that calls for mineral spirits for neutralizing, not a water washdown, and you would want to be relatively gentle removing it in case there is loose glue, which there could be since any environment that was moist enough to generate the mold in the first place could well have impacted glues such as hide glue. But if you haven't sanded the veneer away, a loose piece is mostly just a matter of glueing back into place.
Refinish
Some of those commercial made marquetry kits recommended contact cement.
