I have a wall of pine bookcases (shelves over cabinets) stained “pine” and finished with three coats of clear polyurethane. I want to refinish the wood to a very dark tone.
Is it possible to achieve a dark tone with pine that has already been sealed as this has? If so, what would be the most practical way to go about it? Would I have to bleach the wood after using a chemical stripper?
If I were to refinish this pine in white, would it be less time consuming and mean less fuss to use lacquer rather than paint? If I use either lacquer or paint, would a light sanding of the polyurethane be sufficient before applying either? If I used paint, would alkyd be best?
Thanks for your information.

paint 'em--oil-base primer and 1 coat oil-base paint.
