I have an old school desk of oak that I am replacing the top with quarter sawn oak and then refinishing. What is the best way to remove the old hard finish from the base? I was planning on using scrapers and a scraper plane. I am going to finish the whole desk with a medium stain and tung oil once the old finish is removed.
FYI, the old desk top was “repaired” with a laminate top, very ugly.

Scraping will work but time consuming. Use paint remover then sand. Much faster.

Thank you Uncle Steve,
I just spoke with Lewis Judy (NW Timber) today and he agrees with your suggestion. Remover then sand and refinish. Scraping may also damage the veneer panels.
Should I stay with quarter sawn oak for the top with the oak base or would maple blend in well with the oak base? I like the hardness and smoothness of maple for a desk top, but like the look of the quarter sawn oak.

If the base is oak stick with oak. It will look like it was made that way and not replaced. With oak, fill the grain with pore filler to get a smooth surface.
