I have a friend who just bought a sailboat to refurbish. He said that the teak veneer that is in the cabin has an oil finish on it. He would like to put a satin poly finish on it. What does he need to do to prep so he can do this? Should he just make new?
Thanks,
Michael

If the surface is smooth,no prep is needed.Just apply the poly(should contain UV protection) ,three coats worth, sanding lightly with 180g or 220g between coats.
I'll pass it along. Thanks.

Tell him to re-oil it. Oil on a boat is way easier than poly to renew over the years. A new coat of teak oil will bring the old dry looking wood back around.
I use a synthetic teak oil on my sailboat, its easier to work with and much less of a mess than the traditional oils. Most boat yards have it.
What about spar varnish?
