I already replied to your question elsewhere so I'll just repeat myself here.
"Greg, yes, you can change the layer associations in SketchUp. This is done through the Entity Info box. Select the entity in question and choose the new layer in the drop down window.
Keep in mind that in SketchUp, layers do not separate entities. They are only used to control visibility. I would suggest that you follow the guidelines set out by the SketchUp folks regarding the use of layers. In a nutshell:
Always leave Layer 0 (the default layer) active.
Draw all entities (lines and faces) on Layer 0. Leave their layer association set to Layer 0.
Make components or groups (I never use groups but some do) and then associate layers with them.
Even though the lines and faces are all on Layer 0, turning off visibility for other layers, activates a sort of cloaking device for components with those layer associations.
If you want to ball up a model in short order, start changing the active layer as you draw. It'll be easy to have parts of components disappearing when you don't want them to.
If your model is really confused, I can fix it for you in a few seconds.
