You are probably talking about an IR Repeater which will take the infra red signal and repeat it through a wire to a hidden device.
Harmony makes two.
They have a smart control which is the cheapest and the one I have. It works great. You can also get an app for your phone that will let you use it as an interface/remote. But the included control works well for me. It uses radio freq. to communicate to an IR hub in the cabinet. I placed the hub in a rack of components all a few inches inside the cabinet door.

You can buy an IR repeater (Xantec, Russound, Proficient, Jamo and other companies sell these) or you can buy a universal remote that uses RF (Radio Frequency) to transmit the signals, if you have considered a new remote. The less expensive way is with IR repeater. IR is, however, affected (badly) by direct sunlight and some lighting, as well as some TVs. That's the main reason people in the Custom Integration industry tend to use the RF remotes. Well, that and the ability to control the equipment the way we want.
