Hi Knots Folks,
I’m normally stalking around over at BreakTime but I think this is more of a Knots kind of question. I was asked to repair the arm of a wooden chair, which was attempted before by someone else. Consequently, I have to get rid of the glue they left behind in order to fit the pieces tight. How can I get rid of the glue without damaging the finish or removing too much of the wood.
I don’t know what kind of glue was used, but I have to assume it’s your basic white or yellow wood glue. Here’s a photo showing what I’m dealing with…
And here’s one showing how they don’t fit…
I’ll also have to re-peg the bottom of the arm. I’ve done this with balusters plenty of times, but would like some feedback on that as well.
Thanks

Get some "De-Glue Goo". It dissolves water based glues. I got some when I was completely rebuilding an old bedstead - it took care of both the original hide glue and later repairs with white glue. I think I got it from Hartville Tool, but here's the address on the bottle:
Kale Corp., 962 Linden Ave., Buena Vista, VA 24416
Good luck!
Thanks, that sounds like it's just the ticket. I'll check out Hartville and order some.

Rockler also carries the De-Glue ( http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=11390&filter=de%2Dglue ) But I usually just scrape it out.
Could be worse, some idjit could have plastered it with Gorilla Glue (not that I've ever seen that before, if only)

I don't know what people see in that stuff. I've uses phenolic glues as far back as I can remember and never had a reason to switch, except maybe marine epoxy for exterior stuff. I used gorilla glue once to attach some blocks to birch plywood and, just out of curiosity, whacked one block with hammer. It popped off and didn't even break the grain. That was after clamped to dry overnight.
Titebond II or III, on the other hand, would never break on the glue line. I don't care what the big speal about urethane glues foaming and expanding, plain ol' wood glue cannot be improved upon.
Pardon my rant but you brought it up. :)
EDIT: While ranting about gg I forgot to mention I did a quick Google search for de-Glue Goo and found lots of suppliers carry it, including their own website, http://de-gluegoo.com/. They have it for $9 an 8 oz. bottle. They also have it by the gallon if anyone needs that much.

Ted,
Sounds like others have the answer for the glue removal; for the broken pin, I might be able to help. What is the diameter of the pin, and the shoulder of the arm where it enters the seat ? In other words, how much difference between the broken pin and the main piece ?
What do I know? Hardly anything.. I'd say some white vineagar and hot water!
I have cleaned many old glue brushes using it!
It's probably hide glue - water and heat will dissolve it.
