I would like to know how to remove dirt and water stains on my previously unfinished oak staircase that I have been working on for more than a year. The pourous portion of the oak has an embedded “blackened” stain that I cannot sand out. I would like to put a finish on these stairs, but not over top of the embedded dirt and/or water stains.
Please help
thanks, Guy

Guy, oxalic acid will remove the black stains from oak. Search google for Painters toolbox

Black indicates that the wood has been damaged. It will need to be bleached--household (very fresh) bleach may work. If not, then the oxalic acid.
