Is there an easy way to remove the residue from old masking tape on a piece of plywood? Thanks.

Philip,
You might try a product called "Goof Off". It is available anywhere and is usually located in the adhesive aisle. If the piece has a finish on it wipe off immediately. While it is extremely unlikely that it won't work, the only other alternatives would be to use a single edge razor blade, and as a last resort; sandpaper.

*Unrelated to your specific question really, but if you have masking tape that has been in place for days and/or weeks and won't lift, try a bit of gentle heat from a hair dryer. But you can try this with just the gum too. Warm it a bit, and sometimes the gum will roll off quite easily with your thumb. Sliante, RJ
*I've always been successful using a cloth dampened with mineral turps.
*One more suggestion: Take a piece of cloth or shop towel and fold it so you have a section of several thicknesses, large enough to cover the tape residue area. Place a couple of lengths of masking tape over the back of this cloth (make it like a big band-aid) and apply a liberal amount of paint thinner (mineral spirits)to the cloth. Tape it in place over the residue, leave it there for 30 minutes or so. The masking tape keeps the thinner from evaporating, letting it soak into the residue. When you remove it, the residue should be gummy enough that you can wipe it off with a rag and a little elbow grease. Using the blue "painter's grade" masking tape will minimize this residue when masking tape is left on for a long time. GP
