I recently built a couple of flat wall brackets, finished with shellac and then wiped on a carnauba based paste wax. The people want them darker, but I think the wax will block any further applications and I’m reading mineral spirits may or may not not remove it. does anyone know how? I’m thinking I might have to screw them down to a larger board and pass them through the planer and start over.

There are tinted waxes. Liberon Black Bison wax makes a wide variety of shades. If you don't like the results you can strip after. But tinted wax would be your simplest solution.
Shoe polish is also a tinted wax and should be compatible. And you should be able to remove the bulk of the wax with mineral spirits, then use alcohol to remove the shellac and use tinted shellac.
Great ideas on the tinted wax. You can also tint your own with some dyes.
Naptha is the solvent for wax.
