Hello,
I stained a mantel which sat for a couple of days before I applied the first coat of Minwax Semi Gloss Polyurethane. The finish went on very smoothly, unfortunately, the finish ran/dripped. The finish ran in only a couple of places. The one thing I have learned is to pay closer attention to the tempature in my shop before applying top coats.
The question is how do I remove the runs without damaging the stained surface?
Thank you!
Scott
PS My first thought is to remove the runs with a scraper then
lightly sanding.

Scott,
I used to have the same problem with runs. I now almost exclusively use either gel varnish or wipe on oil/varnish mix which does away with them. Anyway, if the runs are pretty thick, and have dried thoroughly, you might try a very sharp paring chisel used flat on the surface in a shearing (slicing) motion. Sometimes this will just remove the bulk of the drip, leaving the outline. Follow up with very fine grit paper to remove what's left. GP
*GPThanks for your input - it sounds like a good idea. One more question do you know of any live wood working chat rooms? Thanks againScott
*Scott, Check under the Woodworker's Cafe, on the second page under Chat Room by Lee Grindinger. I've never taken part in one so can't offer more. GP
*scott, I use a scraper on finish all the time - I'd agree with your instinct...sb
