I recently acquired a tablesaw that has some superficial rust on the upper surface of the table itself. I have read that kerosene will help to remove this rust and prevent future rusting as long as the surface coating is maintained with kerosene from time to time. I would rather not go the kerosene way unless I have to.
What will help me to remove this rust? Mild abrasive and some sort of treatment? What can I apply to the table top that will prevent further oxidation and not come off onto the wood I am sending through the saw?
Its an older saw so it needs some TLC. The other tools and equipment in the shop have not had this problem due to the low humidity.
thanks!

kerosene + fine sand paper.Goog Luck!
Just this morning faced the same problem with my unisaw. Used paint thinner (turpentine) & 220 sandpaper in my palm sander, followed by a buffing with a scotch-brite pad. Took a bit of time as the saw had been sitting in unconditioned storage for 3 years, & I didn't have the foresight to cover it, but all in all it came out great.
I should mention that I had started out by using Empire's Top Saver, which claimed to be some miracle rust remover. It isn't. I got FAR better results with the other methods.
To preserve the surface, you might try Boeshield t-9. Haven't used it yet, but have heard good reviews. Finally, I ordered a machinery cover from HTC which supposedly will keep moisture off the machine. (Should have done that when I stored it).
Couple links to the HTC cover & t-9...

I acquired a 1/2'' Delta spindle shaper on a auction recently, the top was coverd with surface rust , I used WD40 220 grit wet-dry sandpaper and my palm sander, It cleaned up real good. After i got all the oiley residue off i coater it with past wax.
Have a nice day Lee
Not sure the solvent is that critical, you can try Top Cote and the 220 on a palm sander ( I use my random orbit) and then after the sanding part, wipe it down with denatured alcohol to remove any grit and metal, let dry for 30 min and then finish off with your favorite coating - Paste Wax, Top Cote....
