I have a tub surround area that is tiled which I wish to paint. I am wanting to completely remove the silicon caulking along the tub top and in the corners. Can anyone help me with advice about techniques or chemicals to get this done?

Clay,
Scrape/dig it out with a non-metalic scraper. A wooden kitchen implement, plastic window scraper, anything that will get it off but not scratch the surroundings will work fine. Then use a rag wet with naptha or xylene to rub off the remaining. Use a clean rag with naptha or xylene for a final wipe. Let dry for ??? 5-10 minutes and you should be ready to put new ??? down where the silicone was. Be sure to have good ventilation when using the chemicals!!
Good luck,
Mack
Thanks for the tips everyone. I got that stuff outta there today. I used a chip carving knife to cut and scrape most of it off. Then I cleaned with a rag soaked with denatured alcohol. It seemed to do the trick. I haven't found the silicon remover that was suggested but I'd like to have that for the next job so I will look around for it. The glazed tile and cast iron tub surfaces didn't mark much from the knife and what marks there were the alcohol removed. I also sanded the tile with 400 grit wet or dry paper on my palm sander. Then I wiped it all down with the alcohol too. I didn't shoot it yet because I forgot the cup to my gun today. I know I can see you all rolling your eyes but hey it happens when you get old and careless . I think it looks pretty good but I may hit it with some bleach and TSP tomorrow before I shoot it. Anyhow thanks to each of you for sharing your insights, and I hope that I can return the favor one day.
Clay, Razor blades, exacto knife. lacquer thinner And before painting, scrub the whole wall from bottom to top to remove soap scum rinse and dry (Use TSP Tri Sodium Phosfate) Paint store.
After painting, BUT before re- caulking, Fill the tub with water (To settle tub at the lowest level,) THEN, caulk with a paintable grade of silicone caulk. Don't drain tub water for two hours or longer. ) Stein.

Clay
DAP makes a caulk remover. It's a thick bluish liquid. Works OK on porcelain. I used it just to try it. Probably other solvents work too, but this stuff doesn't make you dizzy. Comes in a tube where the caulk is sold.
