How can I remove the dark stains from water damage in rough cedar? The molding is around a skylight where condensation caused dark black discoloration that highly contrasts with the cream color of the natural wood.

Hi Thoda,
There are no sure-fire methods to repair water damage on rough lumber other than sanding down the area. Most likely the damage is not just topical; it probably has penetrated a few fractions of an inch into the wood.
I would suggest that you apply a stain to the wood so that it doesn't continue to get damaged. Any hardware store variety, such as Minwax, will work. If you use a pigmented stain, you should be able to make the water-damaged area and the raw wood more consistent in color.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll try the pigmented stain and see what happens. I appreciate your input.
