All,
Does any one out there know where I can get a A2 replacement blade for a ECE Primus 711 smoothing plane? Blade size: 1 7/8″ (48mm).
Alternatively are there any thicker carbon steel blades available ?

Hock makes them and Woodcraft sells them. You may also be able to find other sources online. Lee Valley/Veritas sells them, too.
Hi Highfigh,
Thanks. However, I don't think they make the size 1 7/8" (48mm) iron. They come in 2" for replacing No. 4 and No5. planes.

I would email Lie Neilsen. There's an email link on the http://www.lie-nielsen.com website. I believe they can make one for you -- I priced a replacement block plane blade for a Stanley before they started to carry them. The alternate is to compare a Stanley type blade with yours and see how much you'd have to modify it - I think my Primus actually could take a 2" although I haven't tried it. Also think about how thick a blade you'd like - you may have to make a wooden template to see if a 3/16" would fit. Let us know how this turns out -- I've long thought of doing the same!

Hi Joel,
I may contact L-N to find out about making A2 replacement blade. Will let you know if the 3/16" thick blade fit my Primus Plane. Mine has a adjustable mouth.
Recently, I got the L-N replacement blades for Stanley 9 half and 60 half block planes. They make the planes work so much better. Hence I feel that with a thicker A2 replacement blade will make my Primus smoother even better.
May be no one makes replacement blade for the Primus smoother because the original blade works well with the plane. Any one with a different view?

You can get these from David Warren Direct, the U.S. distributor for ECE stuff. Do a search, or see the small ad he runs in the classified ad section of FW.
