I bought an old Stanley 9-1/2 block plane yesterday at the SWTCA semi-annual meeting. Because the iron is short and the back is bubbed (I think that’s the right term; the iron was not held flat against the stone when the back was flattened) it might need a new iron. Does anyone make replacement irons for old Stanley block planes or am I better off looking for an old iron that has some life left?
Also, do you know of a source (on the web preferably) which will allow one to type a Stanley block plane? I have looked at Patrick’s Blood and Gore page, but could not find a type study.
I plan to tune the block plane using the method outlined in David Charlesworth’s book. What is your opinion on how far one should go when tuning or restoring an old plane, that is, a 90-year-old plane that is not very collectable but has all the original parts? Should wood handles be refinished? Should the Japanning be removed and a new finish applied?

Ron Hock makes replacement irons for the 9-1/2. http://www.hocktools.com
Can't help ya w/ the type study.
Tuning... I suggest sharpening the iron, waxing the sole, and using it.
If you're not happy with the results then tune it as needed.

John,
Thanks for the reply. I sent Ron Hock an e-mail and I got a response right away. The funny thing is: the Hock blade is twice the price I paid for the plane! Try to explain that to a spouse.

Robert,
It was great to meet you in Albuquerque. I have a lot of new old-stock irons that'll fit a #9 1/2, if your has the series of elongated holes for the adjuster. I bought them about 1980 to make planes with but never used most of them. I can just mail one to you if you'll e-mail me a mailing address. Don't worry about paying anything, I'll never miss one or two.
Larry,
What a surprise to find you here on Knots!
I had a great time talking with you and all the folks at the SWTCA old tool meet. Up until then, I had only bought a couple of Stanley Bailey style planes from eBay (4C and 6C). It was very informative being able to walk around to the various dealers and handle the planes. It's definitely a better way to judge the quality of a plane than to look at blurry pictures on eBay.
The slots in my plane balde are 5/8 inch wide. You're too kind. You should at least let me pay for shipping and handling! I'll e-mail you my address (through the forum).
Robert
