Replacement Sanding Pad Dewalt DW421
The hook and loop sanding pad is history on my Dewalt DW421 Orbital sander. The recommended replacement is a DeWalt DW4389 5″ Hard Hook & Loop Pad for Sander. One of the lowest prices is $18 at Home Depot.
Does anyone have a less expensive solution for this? Any way to glue a circle of ordinary velcro (Hook part) on the pad so that the sanding disks will stick?
I am in sticker shock on this item.

Man have I been through this before. Dewalt has to do something. I never tried, but I don't see why contact cement wouldn't work. Just make sure everything is clean.
Maybe it's just me, but $18 or so seems reasonable as compared to ~$75 for a new sander......
I have had to replace the pad on mine more than once - always due to other people applying too much pressure on the sander. Mayhaps you might want to consider changing your techniques? That pad should last a long time.
BTW, there are two replacement pads available: the hard one you mention, and a softer one for sanding (gentle) contours.
I would be wary of replacing the hook surface on the one you have - any irregularities may well leave you with a less than satisfactory tool.....not that it couldn't be done, of course, but $18 might well be less than your time fussing is worth.
I agree that it probably isn't worth the time and money to replace the velcro, But Years ago my boss had me do it and it works fine. They even sell little kits @ Lowes-H.D. Just make sure the surfaces are clean.
You might get lucky on e-bay I picked up a nos replacement pad for my dewalt ROS for a couple of bucks. e-bay is very hit or miss for this kind of thing but worth a try. Good luck

Replace it with a new one. But when not in use keep a well used 50grit disc on it for protection.
Work Safe, Count to 10 when your done for the day !!
