I’m looking for information/instructions for replacing the knives in my Delta 12 1/2″ portable planer. Any suggestions? Specifically, do I need to remove the cutter head and, if so, how do I do that? Thanks for any help.

sansmnd,
You can get the manuals on line...google it.
No, the cutter head locks in place when you remove the dust hood (there is a pop-up thingy on the left hand side). Then take the long allen wrench and loosen the screws enough so you can slip the old blade out (lifting it over the index pins) and putting the new one in over the index pins; tighten up and your ready to go.

Be forewarned, Delta seems to have a habit of super-tightening things at the factory. Have a strategy in mind if they've done this to these screws. You really don't want to break the handle on the allen wrench, or break your knuckles banging into something!
I had a length of pipe that I fit over the allen wrench to make it more substantial. Can't remember for sure, but I think I tapped it with a hammer to get the screws to give some. I was very careful and nothing broke. Penetrating oil might have helped. Was also careful not to over-tighten when resetting the screws.
Here's the link to the owner's manual. You have to register, though.

Thanks. That's what I needed.
Forest girl, You hit the nail on the head about delta overtightening there bolts. I Had to grind off my knive setting bolts on my dj20 jointer to get the knives out. Someone should tell them that if they are going to over tighten, Then they should use a better bolt. I kept stripping the bolts to get them out (the heads were like clay)I'm crank this morning But nice to meet you!

Jeeeeeez, that's really bad! I had trouble with the planer, as explained above, and with my smallish drill press (can't remember what part, but something that needed to be undone for assembly). It was wicked, needed an exteder bar for torque.forestgirl -- you can take the girl out of the forest, but you can't take the forest out of the girl ;-)
