I’m looking for a supplier of extra long hard maple veneer. Constantines carry the 96″ flexible veneer rolls, but I would prefer to use the regular, thicker veneer. Anybody have suggestions for suppliers of 6 to 8 ft long veneer?
thanks again,
dave

I have purchased veneer from Certainly Wood over the past several years, they carry just about any species and also carry some in special thicknesses, like 1/16". They ofter prompt service. Their web site is certainlywood.com Good Luck.

Dave,
If you can't get the long lengths in a size that suits, buy veneers sequentially sliced from the log and bookmatch them end-to-end.

I've also purchased veneer from Certainly Wood and was very pleased. Just recently I bought some beautiful QS white oak from B & B Rare Woods, and the quality was outstanding, along with the service. I don't think you'd go wrong with either one.
Try http://www.edensaw.com Their Seattle facility is the veneer production site. From what I saw when I toured the plant, they make just about everything.

If you can't find pieces of veneer long enough for your 18' long panel dave, you might have to consider joining two or more sheets end to end in a bookmatch style. Some people disguise the join by using a staggered zig-zag pattern. Alternatively you might just have to make a feature of the join with something like a bead or cross banding, etc..
From what you described in your other question about veneering a long panel most of it's hidden by additional panels overlaying the base panel. This would leave only a limited width of edge or edges to get really concerned with. Slainte.
Thanks for the recommendations and suggestions. I think I'm going to tell the client we need to build this panel in pieces and join it together in a staggered pattern, similiar to a row of bricks. I think just butting the edges together would work better than trying to cover the joints with banding.
In this case, I can probably just use maple MDF or 3/4" plywood and not worry about making my own panels.
Dave
You should CHECK NOW that you can get an 18' x 6' panel into the client's house and to the location where it will be installed. No point sweating over a huge panel if it can't be got inside without taking the roof off !

I think they will go with the individual panels option, rather than one huge panel - especially after I gave them the pricing options between the two 8^)
I'm not sure if they're still iin business, but Constantines, in the Bronx, N.Y., used to have a great selection of veneers.
Hey Sgian Dubh, do you use a black knife for woodworking? It sounded similar to "an cat dubh" (the black cat), a song by U2. I figured it had a same origin.
Try googling the term, New
Hint: It's something short, hidden away and has a razor sharp edge to it, and usually leaves its mark behind.

Very interesting history. Certainly not for woodworking.
Sgian-Dubh means "black knife" in the Scottish Gaelic language. This wasn't due to the colour of the knife, but because the government banned the Highlander from carrying weapons, so he would have to hide the knife out of sight...
Sharp, incisive and dark. That describes some of my posts, eh? Maybe not Newhuh, ha, ha. Slainte.RJFurniture
Have you tried Bob Morgan? They have just about everything one could ask.
