I would like to reshape a couple of my Japanese watestones (8″X2″X1 1/2″) to have a 5 inch radius across the width of the stone. I am doing this to be able to use the stones to hone the inside bevel of a travisher blade. Any suggestions about how to shape the stones? I as thinking about using a rasp to do the initial shaping, then 100 G wet/dry silicon carbinde paper.

hi bill
instead of trashing your waterstones by grinding the radius into them , how about getting the stone or stones made for this purpose ? i forget where i saw them at the moment ,but one of the more popular catolouge/internet sites has a VERY wide variety of these types of stones at what seems to me a reasonable price :) just my 2 cents good luck grizzzz
Actually, I am making these travishers commercially with a colleague (Elia Bizzarri of handtoolwoodworking.com who is a Windsor chairmaker), and so these stones will be dedicated to this purpose. If anyone knows of the site the previous post was referring to, I would be very interested!
Bill, if you do go ahead and reshape some stones yourself, try the x-coarse DMT diamond plate to do it. I've formed bevels and radii on small oilstones and waterstones in the past - the diamond plate worked well to do it.

You might try making a wood form and gluing some extremely coarse sandpaper to it (maybe 60 grit)
If you have a belt sander fit a 60grit silicon carbide belt and hold the sander in a vice or stand.
No belt sander- get one of those cheap course grade diamond plates.
