Hi anybody out there that can help? I want to do a thin line inlay in white oak using an ivory colored resin. What should I use and where can I get it. I intend routing out a line thin line to form a pattern on the face of a piece of furniture.
Hoping for help JOHN.

john, you can use epoxy and powdered pigment. the most likely problem you will have is getting epoxy into the pores of the oak. you might be able to cover the inlay area with masking tape before you do your inlay, then rout through the tape, let the epoxy dry and then peel it off and scrape it smooth. sanding will let epoxy dust get into the pores and will affect the finish. scraping is hard though. just wondering why such a light inlay on a light wood? an inlay that color wouldn't really stand out.
hope this helps
Thanks Andrew,I am staining the oak but you have set me thinking. I will have to stain first as the resin overspill would seal the wood. Even pre staining will probably not give me a clean finish. Maybe staining and sealing wood , after routing and then using resin. You can be sure that there will be experimentation first. Has any member done this? Thanks also for tips about suppliers. I have come to USA from UK recently and do not know my way around suppliers yet. John

I'm interested in doing the same thing, a resin inlay on walnut. Posed the question on Badger Pond and got several good suggestions. If you go there do a search on 'Inlay Question' to bring up the thread. At this point I'm leaning toward trying to create the shade I want (ivory also) by mixing titanium dioxide pigments, either buff or white with yellow iron oxide (all of which can be obtained from Kremer Pigments (http://www.kremer-pigmente.com)) to get the right shade and then making a paste in epoxy. Got the pigments on order so I should know how it works out in a week or so. I'd be interested in what you decide to do, particularly how you get your desired shade. That seems to be my biggest stumbling block at this point.
