Hi,
I found a really nice piece of wood. Someone has applied that horrible
plastic resin fiberglass stuff to it to make a clock. How does one
take that finish off? Will hitting it with a hammer crack it off?

I have done a bit of marine work and nothing will dissolve polyester resin. You can try scraping it off using a paint scraper. Some will use a propane torch.
All in all, there is no magic. Just work.
