We purchased a second hand 10 year old dining table. Looking for tips to get old stains off and imperfection scratches restored. Thanks in advance.

The first thing to figure out is if it solid wood or veneered. If it's veneered, your life gets a lot more complicated. You will have to remove the old finish without sanding through the veneer. Start with acetone, a nonwoven sanding pad (#00) and lots of paper towels to get the top coat(s) off. Then start sanding with high grits, 180 or 220. Lower grits make it way too easy to sand way too much. It's also usually helpful to disassemble as much as possible. The fewer corners the better. General rules of sanding apply; go with the grain and don't get the sander up on it's edge.
